The Book Thief: HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! It takes place in Nazi war Germany and is narrated by Death as he gives his account of a young girl he met. I really enjoyed the author, there were no 'uncomfortable' parts in the story, it just got better and better as I read it!



Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: Remarkable story and historical account of ancient China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion. Their foot binding shaped their entire lives! Ultimately it's a great story of friendship between two 'lao tongs' or Young girls that are sworn to each other at a young age to have a bond stronger than any other relationship in their entire lives.




A Thousand Splendid Suns: So I really didn't mean to read two stories about the suppression of women in a row...but this one was hard to put down because of all the shock value. It was uncomfortable to read in several parts because it is unbelievable what women in the middle east are faced with! It was kind of like reading a middle eastern soap opera. Lot's of shock value. Lot's of shocking relationships.
