That Day

We visited the 9/11 memorial while my Father-in-Law was visiting. It is absolutely perfect architecturally, artistically, and respectfully.
That day that we'll always remember where we were when we heard the news. I was travelling in Rome with my brother. We were far from home and not able to get in touch with anyone because all the phone lines were jammed for days. Nothing about our traveling agenda mattered anymore at that point, we just wanted to know that our family was safe, and we stayed peeled to CNN in the common room of our hostel for hours and hours.
The memorial has two waterfall reflection pools in the original footprints of the two towers. In the middle of the pools is a large bottomless void- It added a really contemplative effect to it. All of the names of the lives lost are inscribed on the panels surrounding the pools.
